Bob White was born in Ireland and immigrated to Canada with his family. As a young man he represented safe workplace issues for factory workers and began a career as a labour organizer. In 1984 White led Canadian Auto Workers through the creation of an independent union from their founding American counterpart, becoming its leader in 1985.
